Guide to 5M: 06

6. Update Your Organizational Chart

A proper organizational chart is going to be a key component for everyone in your organization as your company grows. Not only will this show a chart of responsibility, but this will also provide all employees with a great visual representation of how all departments and people relate to each other. And before you pin yourself at the top as Official President, CEO and Commander of your kingdom, consider some other alternative organizational structures.

…be sure to think about the positions that will exist in the future, along with the positions that currently exist

  • Hierarchical and Functional Hierarchical– This is the typical and easy top-down org chart and is probably close to what your organization looks like now
  • Flat– This organizational structure has everyone on the same essential authority and works fine with small start-ups
  • Matrix Organization– This structure looks more like a grid where employees can shift between departments and departments work together on common projects

Whether you have a great organizational chart already or need to create one, be sure to think about the positions that will exist in the future, along with the positions that currently exist. Again, this will give everyone a clear vision of what this company may look like in the future and will give them the time they need to develop into those new roles if they wish.
